Midnight. Apparently a good time for two things here; boat trips and music video filming. Unfortunately we're not going to be the next stars of MTV, neither did we recognise those who were, either way we were clearly more amused at the necessity to walk through their set to board the boat, than the guard who let us on.
The main reason for the trip....
For those unfamiliar with St. Petersburg, the city is effectively a series of islands, quite literally kept going by the goods bought in by ships. Trouble is, with a multitude of bridges linking the islands large ships are literally kept at bay, that is until the early hours when they begin to lift.
And so we took to the water last night to witness this process thankfully without the need for too much more walking and spent an hour and half cruising the waters enjoying the riverbank scenery, and of course Rhys trying out the camera night settings. As the bridge finally rose, the flotilla of boats which had assembled ranging from speed boats to party yachts and everything in between raced to return to the canals before the ships headed through.
Definitely worth the ticket cost and even the 2am walk back to the hostel wasn't terrible though the snoring in the room....well that's another thing.
The riverbank by night.
The main reason for the trip....
And the photo we were all waiting for.
