In Russia with Love

So we're here, the plane landed on time and after the longest taxi route which could have possibly been drawn on the airfield (due to maintenance apparently) we made it through security and out the doors.

And that's when it got interesting- it turns out the bus the hostel told us to get isn't in service at the moment which meant navigating the metro with our bags. Not the end of the world in the least but not entirely fun either. The rest of the directions weren't all too good either leaving the one of us with a sense of direction to try and get us there, which she did excellently. The hostel itself is good, feeling more like a large student flat with a front desk than some hostels.

With stuff dropped and much needed rehydration achieved we headed out to see what we could see of 'the Venice of the North' before it got dark. We took a wander down the main avenue, Nevsky Prospekt, taking in some of the monumental architecture that I'm sure will become a theme, in varying styles, of the next month.

We have a tour booked for tomorrow and will be up to plenty besides, but I'll leave that for then and finish simply by saying that we're both very relieved and very excited to finally be out here and on our way.
